    Design Manager

    About the Role:

    becker&mayer! is seeking a highly creative and motivated Book Design Manager to lead a dynamic design and photo research team. This position is responsible for setting a standard of quality and excellence, managing the departmental workflow and actively contributing to new ideas and title development. This individual is an experienced manager with a demonstrated ability to support, mentor, and inspire members in a fast-paced environment, as well as, meet deadlines, troubleshoot issues and adhere to set budgets. Duties also involve hands-on design responsibilities for book projects, proposals, and sales materials. This candidate will work as part of a collaborative editorial and production team on specific titles, and will lead individual and collective efforts that link to key company-wide goals—both creatively and fiscally.


    • Lead a team of designers and a photo researcher to effectively create and communicate a range of design styles for adult and juvenile books.
    • Provide specific art, design and photo guidance and motivate the team to research marketplace trends and content for developing proposals.
    • Participate in brainstorms and collaborate with other departments on new ideas that push the boundary on innovative formats, design styles and production techniques.
    • Direct and adjust workflow depending on the priorities of the business, enlist freelance support as needed, and provide oversight on contract resources to ensure they fall within budgetary parameters.
    • Advise team members on illustration and photo budgets for proposals and projects.
    • Anticipate potential design and illustration problems, devise alternate options or solutions and troubleshoot scheduling issues to ensure on-time delivery.
    • Act as the primary design contact for all new licenses, review style guides and assess viability of design/illustration assets.
    • Foster ongoing relationships with key design and illustration contributors, and explore and develop new freelance partnerships.
    • Mentor individual team members and provide set career path and growth opportunities.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Strong time-management/prioritization skills and demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality work while juggling multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Excellent communication and leadership skills and ability to inspire and motivate team members in day-to-day work and during peak times.
    • Exceptional computer skills, including MAC OS X systems and MS Office Suite; advanced skills with Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator; digital illustration skills and familiarity with 3-D adaptation a plus.
    • Expertly versed in prepress standards and the printing process.
    • Proven hands-on experience in executing book design and directing illustration for print media. Draws on professional knowledge of book publishing and the industry’s evolving market.
    • Highly energetic and proactive in exploring and anticipating topics and trends that could translate as timely and successful book projects.
    • Demonstrated ability to negotiate effectively with external design and illustration and photo resources and to enlist and develop new resources.
    • Strong independent contributor but also collaborates effectively within a team framework.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated adaptability to collaborate effectively with an array of creative talents/personality types, both in-house and externally. 

    Education and Experience Requirements:

    • B.A. in graphic design or the equivalent required
    • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in print design desired
    • 3 years of managerial experience desired
    • Book-publishing experience desired; packaging-design experience a plus
    • Ongoing professional connections to graphic arts professionals desired
    • Design experience with both adult and juvenile publishing a plus

    Production Associate


    The Production Associate is responsible for the trafficking, logistics, and administration of all SmartLab projects. Responsibilities include working with sales to meet client requirements on shipping and carton marking, providing shipping information to vendors and freight forwarders, trafficking safety testing and inspections, setting up and maintaining incoming inventory into inventory management system, and reconciling final project details into a custom database system.

    The Production Associate communicates well with internal and external customers, has demonstrated organization and problem-solving skills, is self-directed, and can work as part of a team.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Supplies correct shipping and logistics info to vendor and tracking through to delivery at the warehouse or to customer
    • Ensures all safety testing and QC inspections occur on time and maintains reports
    • Inspects printer’s carton markings to insure instructions have been followed
    • Proactively maintains tracking system and communicates updates to Sales and Operations
    • Creates shipping and receiving purchase orders
    • Processes all approved invoices
    • Maintains dates and quantities in databases
    • Gathers all final documentation to close out and bill projects
    • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    Key Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Strong computer skills including Mac’s & Microsoft Office Suite
    • Basic understanding of database/ERP systems
    • Strong organizational and planning skills as well as extremely detail oriented
    • Strong communication skills; both written and verbal
    • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
    • Proven ability to handle multiple projects under tight deadlines simultaneously
    • Ability to pro-actively problem solve
    • Ability to work independently and also in a team environment
    • Ability to be self-directed and take initiative

    Work Environment and Physical Demands: 

    This position requires the ability to work with standard computer equipment such as keyboards, monitors, and personal computers. It also requires the ability to lift a maximum of 25 pounds and the ability to stand for extended periods of time. The working environment will include general office environment where there is no physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise and the like.

    Marketing Coordinator


    The Marketing Coordinator is responsible for the tactical execution of marketing and PR plans for SmartLab, an educational toy and game company. The Marketing Coordinator also plays a key role in developing the marketing strategy for the company and its products. Copywriting for packaging and online activities is an important component of the position.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Reports to the Creative Director
    • Responsible for the tactical execution of marketing plans
    • Assists the Creative Director in developing marketing strategies
    • Writes press releases, packaging copy, social media copy, and website copy (including product descriptions)
    • Develops and executes social media and search engine advertising plans
    • Manages the company’s social media presence on Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms as necessary
    • Stays current on toy/parenting trends and marketing trends
    • Participates in new toy/product brainstorming
    • Tracks trade show needs and ensures that show executions are successful
    • Identifies public relations, press, and awards opportunities and manages outreach and submissions
    • Manages the planning, production, and distribution of catalogs and other print marketing pieces
    • Develops concepts for product marketing videos and manages their execution
    • Manages promotions for the company web store
    • Tracks and manages the marketing budget
    • Assigns tasks to Creative Assistant with C.D. approval
    • Other duties as assigned
